About buying presents for your mom – what moms REALLY want

February 4, 2018

This weekend it was my mom’s birthday! I don’t know about you guys, but I personally find it quite difficult to buy a present for my mom. Do you know why? Whenever you ask her what she would like to have, all she says is: “I want nothing, just sweet children”. I mean… you already have those mom, what else do you want?!;p Usually me and my sister buy her a nice perfume or something from Rituals, but this year we wanted to do something different.

We were thinking and realized that it had been quite a long time since we spent quality time together, just the three of us. My sister has been living in England for the past few years and just returned back to the Netherlands. I had been in Spain for a while and moved to Amsterdam some months ago. Time to do something special!

The evening of her actual birthday we dropped her a hint: we gave her a beautiful watch from Renard and told her that it was a symbol for her REAL present, which she would get tomorrow. Honestly, I think this watch was already amazing on its own. For me they are such personal gifts. When I turned 21 she gave me a ring that used to be hers, and I wear it every day. It’s like I’m wearing a little part of her. By giving her a piece of jewelry that she can wear every day (she is not really a ring person), me and my sister wanted to give her something that reminds her of us every day. In case you are curious, this is the watch that we got her.

Anyways, let’s go back to the rest of the present! The next morning, me and my sister kidnapped her and took her to one of her favorite brunch places for a high tea as a surprise. We spent hours eating, drinking tea and talking about any kind of topics. It was SO lovely :) After we finished our food, we took her to the city for a shopping spree. Mom’s always have one problem: they love their children so much that they spend all their money on THEIR needs instead of on themselves. Now it was time for her to get what she needed: some fresh new clothes! We spent the whole afternoon shopping and got her bags full of new clothes

My mom LOVED the high tea and the shopping spree, but not because she got a nice brunch and clothes. The real present was the hint that the watch gave: we gave her TIME. Quality time to be exact. When children grow up, they get their own lives and we aren’t around as much anymore. All that mothers really want is to still see their children every now and then and spend TIME with them. It is so simple, I can’t believe I didn’t think about it like this before.

The watch we gave her wasn’t a one-time thing, it was a promise. Mom, from now on we will spend more time with you, real quality time.

With all my love,

Lynn <3
