Fashion Editorial: Beyond the Walls

December 12, 2016

“Which stories are hiding in those walls?”. I often wonder while standing in front of a beautiful building. Generations come and go, with architecture as their silent observers. There are so many untold stories created behind our walls, some of which create an unexpected impact while others are simply passing by. Continue Reading

Perhaps some of you are already familiar with the fashion illustrator Mimi Nizan: with clients as Lancôme, Moët & Chandon, L’Officiel, Topshop and Estée Lauder she is definitely considered successful! Last week I was delighted to go for a Chai Tea Latte with her in Amsterdam and ask her everything about her work as an illustrator. What is she up to and how did she become such a success? Arty Farty Fashion Friday: The 2 Funniest Illustrators you need to Know

April 22, 2016

Since I am posting lots of articles about FUN this month, I decided to stay in the theme for my monthly Arty Farty Fashion Friday. I’ve been following these two illustrators for a while already because their drawings always make me smile. Let me introduce to you: Gemma Correll and Saray Martín.

Gemma Correll

This illustrator is one of the few that actually made a career from her love of pugs and drawing like a ‘five-year-old’. Gemma’s favorite color is turquoise, her zodiac sign is Aquarius and her favorite word is “Albuquerque”, in case you wondered. Above all, her sarcastic humor is starting to become legendary: not just because of her funny illustrations, but also for the way she answers interview questions. These are two of my favorites:

Why do your illustrations look like a five-year-old drew them?

I hire a five-year-old to do all my work for me. I pay him in fudge. His name is Alan.

Is being an illustrator a real job?

No, it’s a fake job. I actually run a very successful drug smuggling ring. I just pretend to draw things and distract people with my cute pug.

Don’t you just LOVE her already?! I selected some of my favorite illustrations, hope you like them!

Saray Martín (Dessinetas)

This sweet lady is a Catalan blogger (better known as Dans Vogue), ballet dancer and – obviously – illustrator. Just like Gemma Correll she loves to create a cartoon-ish, playful style with her drawings and uses many bright colors. She says her favorite material is watercolor because it creates more dimensions in her illustrations and she gets her inspirations from daily experiences. What I love about her drawings is the fact that her characters are totally adorable, I feel like I can relate to the situations she illustrates, and of course her sense of humor! This is definitely one artist to keep an eye on ladies!

#Traveltips: A side of Paris you never knew before

February 29, 2016

Everyone has their own vision of Paris, but most people think about the Eiffel Tower, the Sacre Coeur, the Champs-Elysées, the Seine, the Louvre… you know, the typical touristic things. Paris is also known as the city of love, the city of fashion, a city rich of culture! But what does culture mean exactly? Of course we glorify the remarkable architecture, classic art and historic tales. But what about the new ones? Paris has a side to it which is actually in full view, but no one seems to see it. Well, actually I think many people see it, but don’t really realize what they are looking at. You must be wondering what the hell I am talking about… I am talking about Street Art!

Let’s face it, at first I didn’t really pay attention to Street Art either. However, after following this fascinating street art tour I won’t be able to walk down the streets like I used to anymore. The passionate tour guide explained us many things about the Street Art culture which I never even had thought about. Let’s dive into my tour with a photo diary and I will talk about some fun facts and some beautiful places to visit!

The Best Low Budget Gifts for Valentine’s Day

February 10, 2016

Hi there lovelies!

This Sunday it’s time for Valentine’s Day again! Even though I believe you should be sharing your love every day of the year, there is nothing wrong with celebrating the day of love with your other half, am I right? I always hear my friends complain that Valentine’s Day is simply a commercial day from society to earn some extra money, so that’s why I came up with five creative ways to show your love while keeping it Low Budget. Can you guess which one will be my present for Alex?

#1: DIY Reasons why I Love You

Simple and Sweet: all you need for this gift is a deck of normal Cards and lots, lots, LOTS of Love! Write down a reason why you love your soulmate on each of the 52 cards in the deck, and bind them together like a little book. What is a better way to show your appreciation then literally telling him/her? And even better: if you don’t have a lover this V-Day, this gift could also perfectly work for your BFF or Mom: everyone deserves love! I found this cute Pinterest idea while checking out Everything Sunny Always, where Hannah explains about her present:

“I filled the deck of cards with 52 reasons why I love my wonderful husband. This is only a fraction of why I love that man. The list is eternally long. But for this project I narrowed it down to 52.”

Isn’t that the MOST romantic thing ever?!

#2: Love all year long: 52 Planned Date Nights

As I said before, showing your love shouldn’t just be happening on Valentine’s Day, so what better gift is there than a promise for a year filled with fun/romantic/cute/crazy dates?! Make a little coupon book with 52 pages on which you write down date ideas for every week of the year. You don’t have a cute coupon book, or no time to make one? You might as well use the Deck of Cards like ‘Reasons why I Love you’! If you have no inspiration for 52 dates you should check out ‘101 Creative Date Nights on a Dime’ from The Thinking Closet, she has more than enough ideas for you! Have fun:)

#3: A Special Breakfast in Bed

Who doesn’t love breakfast in bed? A small gesture to start someone’s day with a smile. I found this adorable idea on ‘Reclaiming Provincial’: a heart-shaped egg in crunchy toast! This literally couldn’t be easier since all you need is bread, butter and an egg. It’s recommended to first bake one side of the toast before cutting out the heart shape and then bake the egg inside the toast with the sunny side up. You can easily customize the breakfast with nice details such as hot coco, fig jam, cheddar cheese, ham, a fruit salad… champagne? Get creative!

#4: Treasure Hunting

Okay so if you have a bit more time to prepare for Sunday, why not make it fun? Leave little notes around the house with reasons why you love your other half, including some tips on where he/she can find you today! Or what about making it a quiz, and the first letter of each answer will explain where to go next? It’s all up to you!

What about meeting up at the place where you had your first date? Or go to that movie you’ve been wanting to see? A walk at the beach with a bottle of wine, or a picknick in the park? Is there a museum/ city/ concert your partner has been wanting to go to? This is your chance for a nice surprise!

#5: Last Minute DIY Crafts

Ups! You’ve been way too busy the past few weeks and you didn’t have time to prepare something special for V-Day (or let’s face it… you completely forgot). Don’t worry, there are lots of easy and fast ways to make your soulmate smile this Sunday. Here are some cute Pinterest ideas:

The Art of Fashion Illustration

January 22, 2016

It has been a while since my last Arty Farty Fashion Friday so I have set my eye on lots of new amazing inspirations and creative souls! I’ve been reading this book which makes me crave to start drawing again: The Art of Fashion Illustration. It’s a beautifully designed book divided into two parts: the Emerging Masters and The Icons. Today is dedicated to the first part, let’s take a look at some of the newest fashion illustration stars!

Audria Brumberg

With her very detailed and extensive production process, it can take Brumberg up to a week to create an illustration. Her style includes both realistic model figures (photography) and abstract patterns (sketching in nature). She draws every single piece of the illustration separately and then manipulates them digitally till they come together in a final work of art.

Her advice: “Constantly look at what other designers are doing and develop good taste. Follow design blogs and study the campaigns of fashion designers to develop an aesthetic and eye for good work.”

Sarah Hankinson

This Australian artist is mainly known for her focus on lines and contrast in her illustrations. “The use of a beautiful line can make an illustration”, she says. Her strong lines are contrasted by her colorful watercolor splashes which make the drawing pop. Later on she manipulates her drawing on photoshop to create clear focal points and make the illustration more visually appealing. “I try to make each piece a balance of light and dark, thick and thin lines, empty and full space.”

Her advice: “Although it can take a while to reach success, she says if you have the motivation to push and market yourself work will come.”

Pippa McManus

One of my personal favorites is in the book! This amazing illustrator is known for painting women on a monochromatic acrylic background with the focus on the woman’s hair and eyes. When she creates an illustration she goes through what she calls her mental rolodex of past fashion editorials and shows, choosing various reference images from pieces that she loves.

Her advice: “I absorb things I see quickly and sometimes subconsciously. So if I only look at designer’s creations and models, I’m much more likely to turn that into something of my own rather than draw from other illustrators’ techniques and styles.”

Yaeko Abe

Abe is one of fashion illustration’s newest talents. The artist from New Jersey began to illustrate professionally in 2012! His style is still developing but his line drawings reflect a simplicity which is not often seen in fashion illustration. Abe often uses different types of ink pens, and later adds colors with markers before adjusting the final piece in Photoshop. “Being loose and spontaneous is my favorite way of drawing,” he says.

His advice: “Keep on illustrating and utilize all your time. Also, be polite to even the meanest of clients.”

Arty Farty Friday: Legends Art Exposition

December 4, 2015

What happens when the #1 Celebrity Photographer of the Netherlands teams up with one of our best artists? It happened! And I was there to witness the result in the Hard Rock Café of Amsterdam! In fact, I was invited for the VIP revelation as the muse of Toshy, the artist. Earlier that month we worked together on the projects ‘Seduce Me’ & ‘Love Now!’, and it was an amazing experience so I had to be at The Opening to show my support!

Toshy Art Adele

The evening was packed with interviews, networking and of course… beautiful artworks! It was an amazing experience to be able to get so close to the paintings and admire the extensive details which Toshy created. Maarten Waalraven (a.k.a. Toshy) is known for taking photos and transform them into art pieces with his unique painting technique which reminds us of street art and graffiti. For this special occasion William Rutten gave Maarten a selection of thirteen portraits of celebrities:

Robbie Williams, Prince, Rihanna, George Michael, Paul McCartney, Kurt Cobain, Adele, Bono, P!nk, Madonna, David Bowie, Mick Jagger & last but not least our own Dutch pride Marco Borsato.

Robbie Williams

I asked William why he chose for these specific celebrities. He answered that he had asked his followers on Facebook about their thoughts but that most of the answers were a little bit cliché. He decided to make a mix between old & new legends, then and now. He chose for celebrities which impressed him, which he admired for staying down to earth, and who he had a good connection with during the shoot. Who he still wants to get in front of his camera? Barrack Obama is #1 on the list.

Bono Prince

It is fascinating to see how Maarten used his painting technique to personalize the portraits by writing texts which are related to the artist. About their work, their life, their thoughts and their image. In my interview with him he explains that he tries to oppose stereotypes with his art: he tries to show the other side of the story, the person behind the public image.

Paul McCartney

Furthermore, Maarten explains how his artistic style has developed throughout the years and how everything started in the 80’s: Graffiti was no longer seen as a nuisance but as a talent and was rightly recognized by the media. Maarten started experimenting with combining street art and his creative studies, which resulted in a new style of art which he defined by the end of 2012: he combined his graffiti skills with personal background, typography and photography. How great is that?! I can’t wait to see the artworks he will make from the project I collaborated on with him!

Currently the Legends Exposition can be found in Ruchpen and will start its tour at the beginning of the new year, something we can all be looking forward to!

Motivation Monday: Inspiring Quotes from the Top

November 30, 2015

Happy Monday!

Let’s get this week started with some powerful fashion inspiration: quotes from the Top! Personally I am a huge fan of quotes and after reading them I always feel pumped, so I want to share this feeling with you guys :) For this week’s inspiration I searched the answer to this question: What is Fashion? Let’s see what the fashion world has to say about it!

Be sure what you want and be sure about yourself. Fashion is not just beauty, it’s about good attitude. You have to believe in yourself and be strong. – Adriana Lima

Fashion is about dreaming and making other people dream. – Donatella Versace

Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by designers. And style is what you choose. – Lauren Hutton

What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language. – Miuccia Prada

It’s a new era in fashion – there are no rules. It’s all about the individual and personal style, wearing high-end, low-end, classic labels, and up-and-coming designers all together. – Alexander McQueen

Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves, of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys, they’d just walk around naked at all times. – Betty JohnsonFashion Inspiration Who is that blonde

To me, style is all about expressing your individuality freely and courageously. – Timothy John

Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live. – Gianni Versace

What’s becoming very obvious to me is that fashion is art. – Lupita Nyong’o

Conformity is the only real fashion crime. To not dress like yourself and to sublimate your spirit to some kind of group identity is succumbing to fashion fascism. – Simon Doonan

Too much good taste can be very boring. Independent style, on the other hand, can be very inspiring. – Diana Vreeland

You heard them! Fashion is all about getting creative, being yourself, following the trends but use them to create your own style and last but not least FUN! Did you have a favorite quote in this list? Have a lovely week and let the creative juices flow while dressing up!

Lots of Love,
