How to keep your Communication on Fleek

March 20, 2016

Hi guys!

As a freelancer you are obviously trying to get as much jobs as possible to make sure you can pay your rent in the end of the month (and because – overachievers -), so it totally makes sense you often mix up your communications. We mail dozens of people/ brands on a daily basis so it’s normal to forget who exactly you mailed, what you told them, and whether they already replied.

c501145e1d1828abe5f33d621abd7eb9

What you do NOT want is to miss that amazing opportunity because you forgot to reply, or because you should have sent them a kind reminder. So why not keep track of your important conversations to make sure you work as efficient as possible? I tried remembering all of my important convo’s but this eventually will make your head explode – not good for your health nor your business. So how to organize your communication? It literally doesn’t have to be more complicated than a simple Microsoft Word table like shown down below:

Communication Table

Whether you prefer to work digital or to print it out, or whether you like to keep a daily or a weekly table: this will work perfectly fine for you! In case you prefer print you should definitely buy a map where you keep all of your tables so you can check your communication history as well. Personally I prefer to use this schedule in a thematic way so I always know where to find the communication I’m looking for. For example: I have communication tables for the brands I am reaching out to for collaborations, Agencies that are interested in working with me, Photographers that want to organize a shooting, etc. etc. But hey! Everyone has to figure out what works well for him/herself right? Down below I explain a bit more about how I would recommend using this Communication Table:

Who: Write down the name of the company, where you found them and on what e-mail you contacted them.

When: Write down the date you contacted them and, if necessary, on which date you should send them a reminder in case they forget to answer you. Personally I would recommend 7 working days, you don’t want to harass them! If they still don’t answer you after 2 reminders it’s probably best to color block this convo Red and let it go, it’s not necessary to keep wasting your time on e-mailing them.

What: Write down a couple of keywords on what the conversation is about. Also useful: use color codes to prioritize the importance of each conversation so you know on which ones you should react ASAP.

Response: Write down a couple of keywords on what their response was about. In case this block is still blank it means they didn’t answer yet and you should send them a friendly reminder!

Note: Is there anything worth mentioning about this conversation? This is the place to write it down to remind yourself, no need to keep everything stuck in your head when there is more than enough work going on!

Do you think this Communication Table will be useful for you? Give me feedback and I will be working on improving it for you guys!

10 Ways to spot a Burnout and 11 Ways to handle it

February 24, 2016
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq11vt7kvv4

Hey everyone,

As you might have noticed, the fashion week season is in full blossom, yet I am hanging around in my comfy home in sunny Barcelona. In case you might wonder why: for the past few weeks – or even months –  I’ve been under a lot of pressure and I decided to take it easy this season. I’ve been doing some research and I came to the conclusion that I’m on the edge of a burnout due to an overload of expectations, workload, pressure and perfectionism.

“But you’ve been doing great! What happened?” Exactly, I’ve been doing more than great all these weeks. In fact, I’ve been doing SO great that my current workload is around 75 hours a week, not counting the other hours I spend thinking about work on the side (I’m not even joking, I’ve been keeping track of my hours). It would be lovely to already earn enough money to hire people to take on a part of that workload, but as long as I’m not there yet, I’m on my own. And since I want my work to be top quality, I will not stop working until it’s perfect. Competition is though, can you blame me?

I was doubting whether I should write about this, or even let anyone know that I might have issues since the world of social media is supposed to be perfect. I neither wanted to give the idea that I’m trying to get compliments or attention with this: I simply figured that since my blog is supposed to be about me helping people with my personal experiences, it would be hypocrite of me to leave out the negative things. And who knows, maybe I can actually help someone by talking about my own experience. Especially in the world of creative freelancers I am sure there are more of you out there that are on the edge of a burnout, since we never seem to be able to stop working. So this one is for you: let’s get better together! In the video I talk about everything you need to know, but in case you want to read more details, check out the text below:  Continue Reading

Have a Beauty(ful) Day! How to deal with Breakouts

December 12, 2015

Don’t you hate it when your skin is not as smooth as you want it to be? I most definitely do, it’s so frustrating! Since I started modelling fulltime my skin became somewhat sensitive if I wear too much make-up, and I have literally tried every single product in the market till I found the formula that works for me. Today will be all about dealing with sensitive skin and the resulting breakouts, but be warned! Every skin type is different so the most important of all is that you pay close attention to what works for you and what doesn’t, it will get you the best results.

1. Prevent It

The first step is immediately the most obvious, but it has to be mentioned anyway! Keep breakouts away with the right daily care: Eat healthy, clean your face twice a day (I use the products form Image Skincare), do a facial mask twice a week, don’t touch your face too much (it will increase the chance of infections) and use the right make-up base which won’t clog your pores – personally I am a fan of Malu Wilz’ foundations, it was recommended by my beautician! Some people say that Clinique is a great brand for your skin, but for me it really didn’t work at all unfortunately.

2. Contain It

Oh no, despite the daily care there is STILL a breakout coming up! I know it’s really annoying but as I said before… try to touch your skin as least as possible! It will only increase the chance of an infection. So what to do instead? Personally I use a medical serum from Image Skincare, which has Retinol as one of its most active properties. This serum you can only buy at your beautician because it’s very strong, but there are other products you can use which you can find in the supermarket! Try to wash your face with saltwater a couple of times, or smudge some toothpaste on the ‘hotspots’ (Paradontax contains more salt than other toothpastes, it will help to dry out the breakout). Furthermore, I’ve heard that lemons and strawberries work good as well, but are less strong.

How to Deal with Breakouts

3. Fix It

Sometimes I can’t help myself but to touch my breakouts, which results in a broken skin which needs way more time and care in order to heal. If you have a bit of time, it’s better to be patient and apply a cream which helps to heal wounds faster and leave it on as long as possible. It is important to keep the wound covered and moist in order to fasten the recovery. If you don’t have a cream from the pharmacy, other products you can try are honey or petroleum jelly (Vaseline), which seem to work very good as well.

If you really don’t have any time at all, a good option is to apply sterile alcohol on a cotton pad and carefully dab it on your hotspot for 2 minutes. In the beginning it might hurt a little since the alcohol is ‘killing’ the bacteria’s, but it will help to disinfect and dry out the wound. Since the skin becomes dry, you will be able to apply a layer of make-up in order to cover the hotspot. However, don’t use this trick on a daily basis! Sterile alcohol damages the skin tissue.

Bye Blue Monday! How to Beat the Flu

December 7, 2015

December is here, and so is the cold! The Flu is around the corner but I most definitely do not have time for being sick! That’s why I have been doing some research on how to deal with your (upcoming) Flu with natural ingredients which you can find in your Supermarket. You can thank me later

1. No more Toxins: Keep your Liver Clean

In order to keep your body clean from toxins, your liver has to work hard! By keeping your liver clean, you will be able to flush out toxins more efficiently and thus prevent you from becoming sick! A good way to keep your liver clean is by eating lots of cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, lettuce and cabbage.

2. Ginger for the Lungshow to beat the flu

Ginger warms the body and helps to break down the accumulation of toxins in the organs, particularly in the lungs and airways. By keeping your airways open, ginger can help to prevent the risk of infection. If you’re having a cold, it’s also great to help you breathe better trough your nose!

3. Lemonwater against Nausea (and more)

In this article, I explained that lemon contains Pottasium, which controls high blood pressure and reduces the effects of nausea. Furthermore, lemon has disinfecting properties, helps cleansing toxins and keeps you hydrated. Personal Favorite Tip: make your own tea with a slice of ginger, the half of a lemon, and a full spoon of honey. This is the ultimate Get Better Recipe, and it tastes delicious too!

4. Saltwater for the Throat

Scratchy throat? Add half a teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and gargle! The salt draws out excess water in your throat’s tissues, reducing the inflammation, and clears mucous and irritants from the back of the throat. The rinse also flushes out bacteria and viruses, which will help in case you’re getting a cold (or if you want to prevent one). Easy but effective, definitely worth a try am I right?

How to beat the flu

5. Ease your cough with Sage

Sage extracts work as a cough syrup, which helps your body move mucus out of your respiratory tract and helps to calm your cough. As a good alternative to cough syrup from the pharmacy, try a drop of sage extract in tea or hot water (maybe with the ginger/lemon/honey mix?)

As a last note I figured I should also quickly mention other common things I read everywhere about preventing the flu: keep doing (light) exercise, sleep enough, reduce your stress levels, eat healthy, get fresh air, wash your hands regularly & stay hydrated. Sounds good to me, I feel ready for the Winter now!

Do you guys have any personal favorites which help you beat the flu? Share your wisdom with us and perhaps it will save us from becoming sick during the holidays!

Lemon Love: 10 different ways to use Lemons for DIY Healthy & Beauty tricks

November 18, 2015

When life gives you lemons…. Go and give yourself some amazing beauty treatments! I could probably write a full essay on all the benefits of lemons, but first let’s start with some of the basics! Lemons contain lots of Vitamin C, hydrate the skin, boost the metabolism of the body, clean greasy skin, and more! You gotta love Lemons

Beauty

 1. Make a Sugar Scrub

Mix lemon juice with sugar until you get a nice paste. Scrub it all over your body, take a shower, enjoy a perfectly hydrated baby skin! It couldn’t be easier.

2. Beat those Blackheads

Mix lemon juice with honey and spread it over your face like a mask. Leave it on for five minutes and then wash it off with water. Repeat three times a week to keep those blackheads away.

3. Light it Up

Lemons light up pretty much… everything. Your hair, skin, teeth, nails… you name it! Just spread lemon juice over whatever it is you want to lighten up, leave it there for a while, and wash it off again. Repeat a couple times a week and you will get some amazing results very soon!

4. Be gone Shiny Skin!

Get rid of that shiny skin by padding some lemon juice with water on your T-zone with a tissue: it’s great for reducing excess oil.

5. Baby Feet

Lemon juice is great for feet, as it will help soften rough skin on the bottom and also kill bacteria that builds up under your toenails. To make the foot soak, get a large bowl and combine three cups of lemon juice, six cups of water, 3 tablespoons of cinnamon powder, and one cup of coconut milk. Soak your feet in the bowl for 15 minutes and then rinse with warm water.lemonlove

Health

6. No More Nausea!

Lemon contains Potassium which controls high blood pressure and reduces the effect of nausea and dizziness. Who knew right?!

7. Bloody Cleanse

Nowadays people consume lots of junkfood or other preservatives and artificial flavors. This builds up toxins in the blood and body…. Not good! BUT, if you consume lemonwater on a daily basis it will help you purifying your blood!

8. Superlemon to the Rescue

Troath infections, cuts, kidney stones, bladder infections, toothaches, headaches, fevers, digestive problems, even vaginal infections! (I know right? What can’t this super lemon do?!) Lemon has great disinfecting properties, a great way to cure your body in a natural way.

9. Hydration Boost

Drinking lemonwater is not only purifying, it also makes your body absorb the hydrating elements of the water better, resulting in a big hydration boost. And besides, it gives water a nice and fruity flavor… do we need more reasons to drink it?!;)

10.Burn fat… BURN

Actually, there is one more reason! Last but not least, drinking lemonwater gives a huge boost to your metabolism. Making it work faster and longer, which results in… yes, you guessed it right… burning more fat. WE LOVE YOU LEMON.

The even better part about all this, is the fact that you can add lemon pretty much anywhere in your daily consumptions. I love grilling my fish in lemon juice, adding lemon to my water, using lemon juice as a salad dressing, cooking my veggies in lemon juice, adding lemon to my green smoothies…. and so much more! Get creative and let me know which other great combinations you found!

Sexy Sunday: lingerie photography

November 15, 2015

Hey there!

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful sunday! This is in fact my first free day in a long time, so I sure am! It felt like the perfect occasion to share this new lingerie photography series which I received last week from Maarten Quaadvliet. It’s amazing!

Sexy Sunday Lingerie (1)

This past year I have been very selective with shooting lingerie since I don’t want to get the image of a glamour model, which is quite easy with my curves and platinum blonde hair. However, Maarten Quaadvliet is a master of portraying sexy, strong and feminine beauty, always keeping it classy. Furthermore he is brilliant with light settings and framings, I learned a lot from watching him work and I can’t wait till I have my own professional camera to start practicing!

Sexy Sunday Lingerie (5)

The styling of the shoot is inspired by Burberry and I am wearing several brands such as Oysho and Hunkemöller. My personal favorite is this sexy Oysho Body in the picture belowSexy Sunday Lingerie (3)

By the way, you would say that this position looks quite normal right? Believe me, it’s the most uncomfortable thing ever! Lingerie photography is highly underestimated I tell you! Don’t feel bad when you see all those skinny and toned models in the lingerie ads: It’s all a lie! In the picture above I am almost breaking my back to get the perfect ‘ass-curve‘ and keeping in my tummy to look skinnier, don’t even mention keeping a straight face despite the uncomfortable position!

Sexy Sunday LingerieNice legs right? I was balancing on my toes to make them look more toned. And my tummy is perfectly flat too? Yep it is… after flexing my abs, not breathing, and stretching out my upper body, all while trying to look like I am just comfortably chilling in my living room with sexy lingerie and a coat because who doesn’t do that on a casual sunday ;) Don’t get me wrong, I love modelling and I most definitely love the results of this shoot! I just want to show that when you try to make pictures in lingerie and it doesn’t look like the advertisments… keep in mind that models use many tricks to optimize the way their body looks in certain angles and lights, it’s their job after all!

Sexy Sunday Lingerie (4)This immediately brings me to my next point: if I can learn it, so can you! I have been getting so many questions about how I pose and how I create my expressions, that I am considering writing an e-book or making a video tutorial where I explain some of my own modelling tricks & tips. So here I am, checking if anyone would be interested in something like that! Let me know in the comments down below or a private message and maybe it will be one of my new projects :)

Lots of Love,

Lynn

Sporty Monday: 7 Fitness Hacks for Lazy Girls

November 2, 2015

Sometimes it’s so hard to get up from the couch and go to fitness… I mean, I think we all agree on what is more comfortable, am I right? Especially if you have to go to the gym and it’s cold outside: Thanks, but no thanks! However, it’s super important for your body to get enough exercise for SO many reasons, as Lady Goldapple explained in her blog last week. That’s why I am dedicating this blog to all of you lazy girls to help you get your ass off the couch, YOU CAN DO IT!

1. Get Social! It’s easy to skip a workout if it’s up to yourself. Try to exercise together with a friend: it will be more fun, you can help each other with tips AND it makes it harder to cancel last-minute: your friend is counting on your support!

2. Reward Yourself: Exercising becomes way more interesting if there is a reward ahead of you once you finish. What makes you happy? If you finish your workout you are allowed to enjoy it! Do you like taking naps? Go for it. Perhaps a delicious lunch? Take your time to cook something nice and relax. Watching your favorite series? Check out two chapters instead of one! You will enjoy it more since you feel like you worked for it and really deserved it.

3. Go Oldskool: Make your workout fun by doing one of those oldskool 80’s/90’s fitness videos. They don’t take too long, have nostalgic upbeat music, and don’t forget the oh so amusing exercise outfits! Make this workout even better by asking a friend to join, there is enough to laugh and talk about!

4. Multitask: I love biking in the gym since it gives me free hands to play with my phone or read a book. The time (and calories) will fly without you even noticing! Fitness was never this easy.

5. Exercise with Daily Movements: If you don’t even feel like putting on your workout outfit, try making mini workouts out of your daily routines! Dance like crazy when you go out to party, take the stairs instead of the escalators, and clean your house like your life depends on it!

6. Create Anticipation: Do you like watching series or reading books? If you do, you must be familiar with the crazy anticipation for the next chapter… what is going to happen next time?! Try to use this anticipation to motivate yourself to workout: get an audiobook which you are ONLY allowed to listen to while you are working out, and let’s see how much more hours in the week you will spend on exercise ;)

7. Pay Yourself, Not the Gym: Instead of going to the gym, pay yourself every time you do fitness on your own. It will save you money, and in six months you will be allowed to buy yourself a present with what you have been saving! Keep your motivation strong by imagining what you could do with all that money, it will help you get through a tough workout!
